A lithium conversion swaps a pack of six or more heavy lead-acid batteries for one LiFePO4 battery and a lithium charger. Most kits are built for a DIY install with basic hand tools. Here's how to plan it.
1. Choose a kit for your cart
Pick a kit built for your cart's make, model and voltage, and check the year and tray where it matters. The Fitment Guide lists every kit we sell by make, model and voltage. Then choose the size: 105Ah suits most carts; lifted carts, 6-seaters and hilly routes benefit from 150Ah or more. See range and amp-hours.
2. Check what's in the box
Kits differ. For example, every Bedrock kit includes the battery, a waterproof 15A lithium charger, a charge port with adaptor, a round state-of-charge meter, a bracket, ring terminals and bolts. Allied Commercial packages include the battery, a waterproof lithium charger, a charging harness, 4-gauge cables, a hardware pack and, for most batteries, mounting brackets. ECO and BOLT bundles list their contents on each product page.
3. Add what your cart needs
- 12V converter if you run lights, a radio or USB ports. Bedrock lists one as required for most carts; it is not included.
- OBC bypass on Club Car carts with an onboard computer, if your kit's maker calls for it.
- Heavy-duty solenoid and 2-gauge cables for high-performance controllers.
- Fuse block if you're wiring several 12V accessories.
4. Remove the lead-acid pack
Turn the key off, put the cart in tow/maintenance mode if it has one, and disconnect the main negative cable first. Note or photograph how the pack is wired, then remove the cables and lift out the batteries (each one can weigh 60 pounds or more, so lift carefully or get help). Clean the tray. Lead-acid batteries are recyclable; [ROD TO CONFIRM: old-battery recycling / core return].
5. Install the lithium battery
Follow the kit maker's instructions. In general: mount the bracket, set the battery in place and secure it, connect the main positive and negative cables to the cart, install the charge port and the charger, then mount the state-of-charge meter and the 12V converter if you have one. Brand install videos on our brand and product pages show the process for many carts.
6. First charge and setup
Charge the battery fully with the lithium charger before the first long drive, and pair the Bluetooth app if your battery has one. Never use the old lead-acid charger on a lithium battery.
Before you start: checklist
- The right kit for your cart's make, model, year and tray (check the Fitment Guide).
- A 12V converter if you run lights or accessories, plus a fuse block for several circuits.
- Any part your battery maker requires, such as Allied's 500A disconnect switch for Drop-in-Ready batteries.
- Safety glasses, gloves, insulated tools, a torque wrench, a battery strap and a helper.
- A plan for recycling the old lead-acid batteries.
Watch it done
The brands' own install videos show the full job. They load only when you press play.
After the install
For the first week, check that the battery is still secure and the terminals are tight, and keep an eye on the SOC meter or app so you learn how much range you really get. Put the old lead-acid charger away (or label it) so nobody uses it on the lithium battery. Keep your kit paperwork and receipt for warranty claims: Bedrock's 10-year warranty is transferable if you sell the cart.
